Happy Sunday! Every week I write a little bit about my path to learning what it means to be resilient. You can read why this started here. Otherwise, enjoy!
By now, it feels that this little experiment of mine has drifted from a journal on resilience to an in depth thought catalog on the concept of effort. I figured today I would try to introduce the two.
But first, some housekeeping. To the two people that consistently open this email, thanks Taylor and TJ, they know why I do this. It’s a way to keep me in check. A way to force myself to continue what I’m doing and I want to further that level of checks and balances.
Enter, Steph Smith, she does something I really like with her website. She updates it with what she’s specifically working on, whether it be courses, books, this that or the third. I love that concept, and I want to steal it, then make it my own.
So starting next week, I’m going to keep a running tally of a few things. Some of them are trivial.
Pages read, + Books read.
Lunges done (I’m trying to do 400m of walking lunges on every training day, shout out to Cory Gregory for this one).
Minutes I’ve spent journaling.
These will pop up on my website during the week.
I think that tracking things on this level will really help me make mindful choices, and that is very important to me. I believe that resilience starts with a proper awareness of where I’m at. Which really boils down to being self aware all day.
Effort, and resilience, how they go hand in hand.
If you’re anything like me and have spent any amount of time in the CrossFit world, or seen the movie Lone Survivor, you’ve probably heard the saying “Moderation is for cowards.” It’s interesting, and effectively means that to do anything in moderation just means you’re scared. Scared to try, scared to fail, whatever it is, you’re scared. I used to love this quote, it’s actually written under the brim of many of my hats.
But what I’ve learned recently is that mentality, that full bore at all times mentality, does very poor things for your resilience.
Resilience is to be able to show up consistently every day, very few people can show up to everything they do with such a level of tenacity, inevitably some areas of life will suffer.
I recently discovered this quote: “Everything in moderation, including moderation.”
The point being, every once in a while it’s ok to go full bore. But you need time to prepare and recover for the hunt. Or else you will not last long.
Here’s to the hunt, and restful Sundays. Enjoy your week.
